Ege University Department of Bioengineering was established in the year 2000 as the first “Bioengineering Department” in Turkey. It has grown extensively since then, both academically and in infrastructure. It is now renowned for its unique quality in RTD and post-graduate training strengthened by its wide-spread contacts and collaborations at national and European levels with significant outputs in research projects, prestigious scientific research papers, industrial collaborations and patent applications.
Currently, academic staff comprises of 10 professors, 4 associate professors, 4 assistant professors, 1 lecturer and 6 research assistants all with excellent scientific credentials and a a broad base of expertise in the field.
Since its establishement, 468 Bachelor’s Degrees, 122 M.Sc. and 31 Ph.D. degrees were awarded. The Department is proud of all its graduates. A large number of the graduates are enrolled in postgraduate programs either in Turkey or abroad. Six of our graduates are already working as academicians in the bioengineering departments of Ege University, Yeditepe University, Adana Science and Technology University, Katip Çelebi University and Fırat University and 35 of our graduates are working as research assistants and experts in the bioengineering departments all over Turkey. A significant fraction is working in industry and in public institutions.
The Department of Bioengineering has always valued its pioneering position and have tried to act in accord with the responsibility of being the first in the country. After a hiatus of 30 years, it has resurrected the National Bioengineering Congresses and organised the “IVth National Bioengineering Congress” with international participants in 2008 and has continued the tradition since then. The latest in the series, the “VIIth Bioengineering Congress” (BEC2015) has been held between the dates 19-21 November 2015 as an international event.
