Ege University, Department of Bioengineering was established in the year 2000 as the first “Bioengineering Department” in Turkey. The Department of Bioengineering has continued to educate qualified and successful bioengineers to the sector and to train scientists since the day it was founded.
Currently, our department continues its activities with a total 26 permanent academic member including 12 professors, 5 associate professors, 3 assistant professors, 3 lecturers, 3 research assistants. In addition, there are 3 research assistants who join our department on assignment.
Representing one of the most modern infrastructures of our university, the Bioengineering Department building consists of classrooms, offices and laboratory blocks built on a total surface area of 10 thousand square meters. In the classrooms block of our building, there are 4 undergraduate classrooms with 110 people each, 5 undergraduate classrooms with 60 people each, 6 graduate classrooms with 25 people each, and a computer laboratory with 40 people, and there are 29 offices, 3 study rooms and 2 meeting rooms in the office block. In the laboratories block, it includes 3 student laboratories and 26 research laboratories in different fields of expertise. At the same time, there are 2 pilot facilities and a conference hall for 320 people in our building.
Our department has made an intensive effort to develop its academic and technical background during 21 years since its establishment. Six years after its establishment, within the scope of the EU 6th Framework Program, it was selected as the 'National Center of Excellence' in the field of Bioengineering and Biotechnology with the BIO-ACE Project, and it has carried out many pioneering and important studies in our country. In recent years, our academicians carried out various R&D projects such as TÜBİTAK, European Union and Industry projects etc. With their research activities on industry consultancy, patents, prototypes, our department made contribution to the science and technology in both national and international level, and it has become one of the departments with the highest research and publication performance of our university.
Our department has received a 5-year MÜDEK Accreditation Certificate and EUR-ACE Label Certificate until September 30, 2026.
The Department is proud of all its graduates. A large number of the graduates are enrolled in postgraduate programs either in Turkey or abroad. Some of our graduates are working as research assistants and academicians in the bioengineering departments all over Turkey. A significant fraction is working in industry and in public institutions.
