Engineered Living Materials & Bio-Hybrid Systems Laboratory

Assist. Prof. Zalike KESKIN ERDOGAN's LAB

Research vision:

To redefine the boundary between biomaterials and biological organisms by creating bio-hybrid interfaces that sense, process, and respond to physiological cues. The group aims to transform passive medical advancements into active, living systems that utilize synthetic biology to drive tissue regeneration and real-time health monitoring.

The research from this lab will operate at the cutting-edge intersection of materials science and synthetic biology. We leverage our expertise in polymer-based biomaterials and cell encapsulation to develop next-generation scaffolds that do not just support life but actively interact with it.

Our research focuses on two primary pillars:

1.     Programmable Scaffolds: Integrating whole-cell bacterial biosensors into hydrogel constructs to create "smart" environments capable of detecting biomarkers and releasing therapeutic factors on demand.

2.     Advanced Tissue Engineering: Building upon a foundation of tissue engineering and complex co-cultures to develop biomimetic architectures that replicate the dynamic nature of the human extracellular matrix.
